Mississippi River

The Minneapolis BNSF Rail Bridge is a combination of a girder bridge and a truss bridge that spans the river bed of the Mississippi River between downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota and Nicollet in Minneapolis Iceland. It lies in direct proximity to the current Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.

History

The bridge was built in 1893 by the Great Northern Railway in 1926 and remodeled. It replaced a building that had been erected in 1867 at the same location for the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad and the first railway crossing of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis has been.

Today's form

In 1963, two of the tension fields and a pillar were removed. Instead, a Petit- Truss- field has been added. This measure was taken in order to allow in connection with the construction of a lock navigation above the Saint Anthony Falls. The use of Petit Truss structures is unusual for the Mississippi River, but the other two bridges that lead to Nicollet Iceland, have the same design.

The south side of the bridge has an unusual shape. Originally it was just before the one end of the bridge a branching curve (later the Minneapolis Great Northern Depot) led to the Minneapolis Union Depot. As the passenger traffic in the center in Minneapolis set and the West River Parkway was built, it has reduced the curve with the tracks to the depot.

Use

The St. Paul and Pacific Railroad eventually became St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway, then Great Northern Railway, Burlington Northern, and finally to the BNSF Railway. You currently operates the following links to Willmar and Monticello, but also allows the connection to the Twin Cities and Western Railway.

Once the stop of the Northstar Commuter Rail will be opened on Twins Ballpark, go back passenger trains over the bridge.
