Minneapolis Institute of Arts

The Minneapolis Institute of Arts ( MIA ) is a major art museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Covering an area of ​​32,000 square meters, it exhibits more than 80,000 objects from over 5,000 years of world history. The collection includes paintings, photographs, prints and drawings, textiles, and architecture. In addition, it houses collections of Asian, African, Oceanic and American art. It is known for the objects of Asian art, especially for the Chinese architecture and ceramics.

History

After a lack of visual arts in the region of Minneapolis had been established, interested citizens came together in 1883, the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts founded. With the aim of making the city a wide selection of art accessible, they organized various art exhibitions. After she had been renamed in 1889 in the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, she moved into its first permanent premises in the newly built Minneapolis Public Library. The private, designed by McKim, Mead, and White Museum building was opened in 1915. It was considered one of the finest museums that were built in the architectural style of the École des Beaux -Arts. The construction should be the first of several sections originally, ultimately only the front building was built in this style. The designs for future additions come from other well-known architects. How could an extension of Kenzo Tange in 1974 and an extension of Michael Graves be completed in 2006.
