The Minneapolis -Saint Paul International Airport ( IATA: MSP, ICAO: KMSP, short MSP) is an airport located in the metropolitan area known as the Twin Cities Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in Minnesota. Geographically, the airport is located, for the most part in the census district of Fort Snelling and beyond in the south of the Twin Cities. The terminals are located in close proximity to the Mall of America.

History

The origin of the airport Minneapolis -St. Paul is a race track that has been converted into an airfield. This was called the Speedway Field. In 1921, he was renamed in memory of the two pilots of the First World War, Ernest Groves Wold and Cyrus Foss Chamberlain, in Wold -Chamberlain Field. In 1944, he became a Minneapolis -St. Paul Metropolitan Airport / Wold -Chamberlain Field named, shortly after the " Metropolitan " by " International" was replaced.

Terminals

The Minneapolis -St. Paul has two terminals: one is the Lindbergh Terminal ( after Charles Lindbergh ) and the much smaller Humphrey Terminal ( after Hubert H. Humphrey ). For the transport of passengers within the airport are two people mover in use.

Expansion of the airport

In recent years, the airport has been massively expanded. Thus, the terminals were increased by the increase in passenger numbers to cope. Especially the former Northwest Airlines, which had its headquarters near the airport in Eagan and Minneapolis -St. Paul uses as an international hub, pushed for an expansion. A proposal of the airline to relocate the airport from the city out into the surrounding region, but was rejected again. Instead, the airport will be expanded under the MSP program 2020 Vision. See These measures, inter alia:

  • To expand the Humphrey Terminal at 22 Gates,
  • A new parking garage at the Humphrey Terminal,
  • Exclusive use of the Lindbergh Terminal of Northwest (now Delta ) and other SkyTeam airlines and
  • The expansion of the Lindbergh Terminal to another terminal hall.

Originally, the completion was provided until 2007, by the insolvency of Northwest Airlines shifts but this at least a year.
