Minnehaha County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. In 2010, the County had 169 471 inhabitants and a population density of 80.8 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative seat of the county is Sioux Falls, named after the waterfalls on the Big Sioux River.

Geography

The County is located in eastern South Dakota on the Coteau des Prairies -called plateau that extends from eastern South Dakota to in the southwestern Minnesota and northwestern Iowa.

History

The County was formed in 1862. After it was dissolved again in the meantime, it was reorganized in 1968. The word Minnehaha comes from the language of the Sioux Indians and means waterfall.
