Minnetonka is a city in Hennepin County in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It is located about 13 kilometers west of Minneapolis and St. Paul in the metropolitan region of the Twin Cities and has 49 734 inhabitants ( 2010 census ).
Geography
Minnetonka is a suburb of the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul in the Midwestern United States. The urban area covers a small portion of eastern Lake Minnetonka, one of the largest lakes in Minnesota. About the Minnehaha Creek flows from this by Minnetonka and ends at the Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis into the Mississippi River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 73.1 square miles, of which 2.9 square miles of water.
History
Among the first settlers in the area of today's Minnetonka include the Ojibwa and Dakota Indians. First European -born explorer records date back to 1822, when Fort Snelling was built and explorations from the Minnehaha Creek through to Lake Minnetonka have been made. With the Treaty of Traverse Sioux territories passed into the possession of the United States. The first census of 1857 describes 41 households in the Minnetonka Township. Significant for the further development was the timber industry with the saw-mills at the Minnehaha Creek.
1956 was granted the city rights Minnetonka.
