Minoru Sano

Minoru Sano (Japanese佐野 稔, Minoru Sano; born June 3, 1955 in Yamanashi Prefecture ) is a former Japanese figure skater, who started in a single run.

He was from 1972 to 1976 five times in a row, a Japanese master and represented Japan from 1973 to 1977 at the World Championships. In his last World Cup in 1977, before a home crowd in Tokyo, he became the national hero when he won by winning the bronze medal, the first World Cup medal for a Japanese at all. By Takeshi Honda 2002 had also won a bronze medal, Sano was the only Japanese man who had succeeded. At the Olympics 1976 he finished ninth.

Sano works as a TV commentator and figure skating teacher. Among his pupils were Shizuka Arakawa and Yamato Tamura.
