Minturno is an Italian town in the province of Latina in the Lazio region with 19,787 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Geography

Minturno is located 153 km southeast of Rome, 89 km south-east of Latina and 72 km north- west of Naples. The old town is on a hill, to the southwestern foothills of the Monti Aurunci, on the coastal plain of the Tyrrhenian Sea west of the mouth of the Garigliano. Within the area are the coastal resorts Scauri and Marina di Minturno. In contrast, the districts Pulcherini, Santa Maria Infante, Tremensuoli and Tufo are old villages in the hills behind the coast.

The municipality covers an altitude of 0 m slm s.l.m. to 205 m.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

Traffic

History

Minturnae

The ancient Minturnae 41.24206613.768132 belonged to the Five Cities and Towns of Ausonians, the Pentapolis Aurunca. 314 BC Ausona, Vescia and Miturnae were destroyed by the Romans. The construction of the Via Appia from 312 BC began the resurgence of the city. 296 BC Minturno was a Roman colony. The city was surrounded by a wall and a castrum was built. Traetto

Policy

Aristide Galasso (PD ) was elected in April 2010 to the mayor. He won the election against his predecessor Giuseppe Sardelli ( PdL ) (2005 - 2010).   • The ancient Minturnae was excavated and partially open to the public. The site south of the modern city offers a small museum in the convolutions of the ancient theater which dominates the ensemble.
