The local authorities, however, indicate 38 878 inhabitants ( 2007). Capital is Rrëshen.

Geography

The area of the circle Mirdita is separated to the west of the coastal plain and the sea by a mountain range ( almost 1000 meters above the Adriatic ). Behind it is a highly rugged and eroded plateau, which is better described as a hill country today and especially in the east and north merges into higher mountain ranges up to 2100 meters. The highest point is the Maja e Kunorës në Selite with 2121 müa. The average height of the landscape, located at about 400 meters above the sea. The area is completely drained with the exception of some valleys on the southern and eastern borders of the river fan.

The county is sparsely populated. There are only two major towns: Today Rrëshen capital ( 15,234 inhabitants) and the Rubik small former mining town ( 2,300 inhabitants - 2005, estimate). The mining town formerly Kurbnesh with several thousand inhabitants, is now virtually depopulated. The villages lost in the rolling countryside. The area is heavily affected by rural-urban migration since 1992.

Economy and Transport

In various places copper and other Bodenerze were dismantled. Important mines there were at Rubik and Kurbnesh. In Rrëshen and Rubik there were metallurgical factories. The collapse of world market prices, the completely outdated technology and a lack of investors left the industry after the collapse of communism but come to a halt. Therefore, the economy is currently in a circle on the ground. It was only in 2006, Canadian firms were active, who have found in exploration and gold, but in addition remember also reduce zinc and copper. The legacy of the mines pollute the environments still.

Tens of thousands of people from the circle Mirdita have left the region since 1990 to find abroad or to urban centers in Albania work either. Others moved into the coastal plain, because the small plots in the less fertile mountains, they were no longer able to feed. Many left behind live on remittances from migrants.

Mirdita is crossed by the main road from Durres to Kosovo. The new highway 1 after Kukes - so far Albania 's biggest infrastructure project - was officially opened in June 2009. The traffic will initially settled on two of four tracks. The highway leads from Rrëshen to the northeast through the valley of the little fan that was hitherto hardly developed. In the extreme northeast corner of the circle at the Thirra Kalimash tunnel was - with over five kilometers of Albania 's longest tunnel - created that leads from there to Kalimash in Kukes district. From the expansion of this road the entire region could benefit: A hitherto hardly accessible valley was opened up by a motorway.

The railway line of the e Hekurudha Shqipërisë after Rrëshen was shut down.
