Mirebel

Mirebel is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Mirebel is located at 575 m above sea level. M., about 14 km east of the town of Lons -le- Saunier (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in the central part of the plateau Caledonia (first Jura plateau ), at the western foot of the heights of the Côte de l' Today.

History

Several findings indicate that the municipality of Mirebel was already inhabited in Gallo- Roman times. Mirebel mentioned in documents in the 12th century. The place name comes originally from the Latin word mirari ( watch, admire ) and the Old French bel ( beautiful) back. Built in the medieval castle of Mirebel belonged to the counts of Vienne, who resided here for a long time. At the foot of the castle hill, a settlement which was awarded in 1292 liberties developed.
