Mirex is a cyclic organic chemical compound from the group of chlorofluorocarbons used as insecticide active ingredient - was used - mainly to control fire ants, leafcutter ants and termites. Also Mirex was used as a flame retardant in plastic and rubber parts, colors as well as electrical equipment.

Mirex is suspected to be carcinogenic. It may be hepatotoxic and acts on the immune and endocrine systems. For crustaceans, it is very toxic. The half-life for the degradation is approximately ten years. Under the influence of UV light, it is decomposed into Photomirex ( C10HCl11 ), which is also toxic.

Analytical detection

The chemical- analytical detection in environmental samples, food and feed can be performed with chromatographic methods.

Ban

In the Stockholm Convention of 22 May 2001 for a worldwide ban on the manufacture, sale and use of twelve persistent organic pollutants (POP persistent organic pollutants) was ratified. Under this " dirty dozen " ( dirty dozen ) is also mirex. On 17 May 2004, the Convention, after ratification by the 50th candidate country, gained global validity.
