Mirgissa

At the former Sudanese west bank of the Nile, the place was Mirgissa ( ancient Egyptian Iqen ). In the immediate vicinity was the Middle Kingdom under Sesostris III. an ancient Egyptian fortress for the purpose of border security to Nubia built. Since the completion of the Aswan High Dam, the former western shore is flooded by Lake Nubia.

The fort, about 334 kilometers south from Aswan, was in the range of the second Nile cataract and was having a size of about 4 acres ( 40,000 m²), the largest facility of eleven Nubian frontier fortresses.
