Mirko Slomka (2011)

Mirko Slomka ( born September 12, 1967 in Hildesheim ) is a German football coach. Since February 17, 2014 he has been head coach of Hamburger SV.

Coaching career

Starts at Hannover 96 and TeBe Berlin

Slomka coached from 1989 to 1999, first junior teams Hannover 96, including the later national player Gerald Asamoah, Sebastian Kehl, Per Mertesacker and Fabian Ernst.

From 1999 on, he worked at Tennis Borussia Berlin, even as a youth coordinator. In 2000, the then second division Tennis Borussia but the license was withdrawn and added to the team in the Regionalliga; almost all players left the club then. On 19 July 2000 Slomka was appointed head coach. Within just a week, he had to re- arrange almost the entire squad. After a surprisingly good start to the season TeBe Berlin then rushed off and on. After five losses in a row - the team was now the relegation zone - Slomka was released on 16 November 2000. From 2001 to 2004 he was again at Hannover 96 active, this time as an assistant coach of the professional team under Ralf Rangnick.

FC Schalke 04

From 1 October 2004 to August 5, 2008 Slomka was FC Schalke 04 under contract, first again as assistant Rangnick, from 4 January 2006 as the head coach. In the second half of the season 2005/ 06 he led Schalke 04 in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup, where came to eventual winners Sevilla FC from the after extra time. In the Bundesliga, the team missed 4th place the targeted qualification for the Champions League.

At the beginning of the season 2006/07, followed next to some poor results in the Bundesliga from the early UEFA and DFB Cup. Slomka replaced in this situation the long-time goalkeeper Frank Rost by the then 20- year-old Manuel Neuer. Then set up a winning streak and led Schalke months at the Bundesliga table. The season ended in 2nd place, which meant participation in the Champions League.

In the 2007 /08 season Slomka led the team to the quarter- finals of the Champions League. There, the FC Schalke 04 difference against Barcelona from (twice 0:1). There followed three days later, a defeat at Werder Bremen (1:5). On 13 April 2008, the club Slomka set free prematurely. After presentation of general manager Andreas Mueller should not have been apparent that the team sports could evolve yet. The media praised Slomka due to the fact that he was the most successful coach in Germany after Ottmar Hitzfeld was at an average of 1.8 points per game between 2006 and 2008. On 5 August 2008 Schalke confirmed media reports that the contract had been terminated with Slomka. Slomka received a severance payment of EUR 800 000 for its actually running until 2009 contract.

In September 2008, Slomka an intern for one week at Real Madrid and the German coach Bernd Schuster.

Return to Hannover 96

On 19 January 2010, he returned as head coach for the relegation-threatened Bundesliga side Hannover 96, who was on the 16th place in the table after the 18th matchday of the 2009/10 season. By a 3-0 victory in the direct relegation match against VfL Bochum managed 96 on the final day of the season to avoid relegation. Even before the start of the next season, there were discrepancies between the sports director Joerg Schmadtke, whose job it was to save money, and Slomka, who would have liked to have seen gains for the squad.

Matchday 5 of the 2010/11 season Slomka reached Hannover in the match against Werder Bremen (4:1), his 50th victory in his 100th game as a Bundesliga coach. After a strong first round with the best placement of the club's history echoed the call for a contract extension; 25 January 2011 Slomka extended by two years. Hannover 96 delivered the best season in club history and stood after the last game with 60 points just behind Bayern Munich at rank 4 This means that the team had qualified for the Europa League.

In the 2011/12 season ranked 96 again consistently in the top half of the table, after the completion of the first round at No. 7 in the Europa League, survived successfully playoff games and group stage and moved into the knockout stage. At the end of Hannover 96 failed in the quarterfinals at Atlético Madrid, which was later to win the final. In December 2012, Slomka extended his contract with Hannover 96 until the summer of 2016. In spring 2013, the dispute between Slomka and Schmadtke came to a head, eventually left Schmadtke the club.

After a series of defeats and without an away point Slomka end of December 2013 were released as head coach of Hannover 96. The circumstances of the dismissal and the handling of the club president Martin Kind with Slomka met with criticism.

Hamburger SV

On February 17, 2014 Slomka took the stand at the 17th place in the table Bundesliga team Hamburger SV from the recently released Bert van Marwijk. He signed a contract until 30 June 2016, which also applies to the second league.

Private

Slomka is married and has two children.

Slomka graduated from high school at the Gymnasium Sarstedt. He has completed a teaching degree in mathematics and physical education. He lives with his wife, his daughter and son in Hanover. Since 2013, Slomka committed to Show Racism the Red Card - Germany eV In April 2013, he participated in a workshop organized by the Education Initiative and told the pupils about his own experiences with racism and discrimination. He also participated in the campaign "Our team against racism " part.
