Mirza Hameedullah Beg

Mirza Beg Hameedullah ( born February 22, 1913 in Lucknow, † 19 November 1988) was an Indian jurist.

Life

Mirza Beg Hameedullah comes from a prominent Muslim family in Hyderabad; his father Mirza Samiullah Beg was chief judge of the State of Hyderabad. Beg studied in Hyderabad and then in 1931 at Cambridge University and the London School of Economics. Later he returned to India and was from January 1977 to February 1978 Chief Justice of India ( Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India ). After his retirement Beg took over from 1981 to 1988 the office of chairman of the Commission for Minorities ( Minorities Commission) of India. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1988.
