Misima Island

Misima is a volcanic island in the archipelago of the Louisiade ( Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea). The island is 40 km long and 10 km wide, and has an area of ​​202.5 km ². It is located about 20 km north of the extreme north-western barrier reef of Vanatinai, and 80 km north-west of the island. Misima is forested mountainous and dense. The Mt Koia Tau is with 1036 meters the highest peak of Louisiade archipelago.

Population

Misima had 14,756 inhabitants to the 2000 census, the most densely populated island in the archipelago. The main town Bwagaoia, also the seat of local government for the western part of the archipelago Louisiade ( Louisiade Rural Local Level Government), located on the southeast coast of the island.

The population was spread out with 75 villages and three separate facilities including Bwagaoia station (near the main town Bwagaoia on the southeastern coast ) with 734 inhabitants, is the second largest settlement. Economy

A gold and silver mine was opened on the island in 1990, but closed again in 2004, among other reasons of environmental and health protection.
