Miskito Cays

The Cayos Miskito (English Miskito Cays ) are a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea, about 45 kilometers east of the Miskito coast of Nicaragua located. The group consists of a large island ( Cayo Major) with 37 km ² area, eleven smaller cays with vegetation as well as numerous coral reefs, sandbanks and mangrove forests.

The uninhabited islands are part of the barrier reef off the east coast of Central America and a major retreat, among other things for the hawksbill turtle ( Eretmochelys imbricata ) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Because of the unique biodiversity of coral reefs as well as the mangrove forests are the islands since 1991 under protection and are a popular destination for eco-tourists.
