Mission critical
Systems are referred to as mission critical, for a project (mission) are crucial.
The term is used in the IT sector, for example, if an application is threatening to collapse, a software component should not be functional. Conversely, parts of the program that are not crucial for the stability of the application, referred to as non-mission critical.
The term originally comes from the aerospace industry, where the failure of one component can lead to multi-billion dollar losses and even the loss of human lives.
