The County is located in northeastern Arkansas, Missouri and bordered to the north on the east by the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Tennessee. History

The first Europeans in the area were probably Hernando de Soto and his companions, after they had crossed the Mississippi in 1541. Even Father Jacques Marquette was in 1673 during his Mississippi expedition in the area. 1682 was probably the French explorer La Salle here.

The Mississippi County was formed on November 1, 1833 from parts of Crittenden County. It was named after the eastern border of the county forming Mississippi. First district capital was Osceola. 1870, the District Court was moved to Blytheville.

The census of 1840 documented a population of 1410 inhabitants, of whom 510 were slaves. Other settlements in the county were Barfield, Chickasawba (later merged in Blytheville ) and Elmot (now Luxora ).
