Mississippi River Delta

The Mississippi River Delta is a land and water area, which is formed since the Holocene, as deposited by the Mississippi River transported suspended solids in front of the mouth of the river. In the last five thousand years, the coast of Louisiana has become so advanced by 25-80 km in the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi Delta is the southernmost part of the Lower Mississippi Delta region, the upstream, starting about 1200 km further in southern Illinois.

The approximately 12,000 square kilometers of extensive river delta is an ecologically important part of the Gulf, making 40 percent of the salt marshes in the continental U.S.. It is an important fishing ground for fishing, including shrimp, crabs and crayfish. By the delta drive numerous ships. A large part of the shipped to the United States crude oil landed in Port Fourchon, Louisiana.
