Mississippi State Senate

The Senate of Mississippi (Mississippi State Senate ) is the upper house of the Mississippi Legislature, the legislature of the U.S. state of Mississippi.

The chamber of parliament is composed of 52 Senators representing an electoral district in each case. Each of these units includes a fixed average rate of 54 704 inhabitants ( 2000). The senators are elected for four -year terms; limiting the terms of office does not exist. The meeting room of the Senate is located together with the House of Representatives in Mississippi State Capitol in the capital Jackson.

Tasks of the Senate

The Senate of Mississippi fall As in upper houses in other states and territories, as well as in the U.S. Senate compared to the House of Representatives special tasks that go beyond the law. So it is up to the Senate, nominations of the governor in his cabinet to accept or reject other offices of the executive branch and commissions and authorities.

Constitution of Mississippi

According to the current Mississippi Constitution of 1890, the Senate shall consist of not more than 52 members who are elected for four -year terms. Elections to the Senate are to be held during the parliamentary elections on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

Structure of the chamber

President of the Senate is the respective incumbent Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi. An votes he only participates to bring about a decision at stalemates. In the absence of the Vice- Governor of the respective President pro tempore stands in front of the plenary sessions. This is elected by the majority party of the Senate and later confirmed by the chamber. Compared to other lower houses of the powers of the president pro tempore are restricted. But the Lieutenant Governor has the powers to appoint the chairmen and their deputies to the various Senate committees, regardless of party size. Current Lieutenant Governor and President of the Senate is the Republican Phil Bryant, president pro tempore is the Republican William Gardner Hewes.

Other important office holders are the Majority Leader ( Majority Leader ) and the leader of the opposition (minority leader), who are elected by their respective party meetings.
