Mist net

Japan networks are specialized networks that are used for scientific bird and bat catcher. They consist of very fine network, which is hardly noticed by the animals to be caught. Since the nets are placed firmly at the site, you catch so only untargeted animals that fly into it by accident.

Scientific Terms

Japan networks are used by almost all working scientifically bird stations. In order to safeguard animal welfare the nets are dismantled when not in use or tightly wrapped in stationary networks, to avoid catching accidental. The nets are checked at short intervals, so that trapped birds do not stay too long in the network. They are also a source of danger for small and very active birds that can be strangled in to grobmaschiggen networks themselves.

Illegal use

Japan networks today are still - despite the ban on bird-catching in the European Union - illegal for the capture of songbirds and migratory birds for human consumption or for the cages. Main areas of application are mainly the northern Italian Alps, the Pyrenees and parts of the Benelux countries. Legal, networks are used for bird ringing.
