Mistretta

Mistretta is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 4947 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Mistretta is located 144 km west of Messina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture, animal husbandry and handicrafts.

The neighboring municipalities are Capizzi, Caronia, Castel di Lucio, Cerami (EN), Nicosia (EN), Pettineo, Reitano and Santo Stefano di Camastra.

History

The place had the name Amestratus in antiquity. In the Middle Ages, the city developed. 1101, the city was declared the county.

  • Parish church with a portal from 1494, inside a statue of Saint Lucy
  • Santa Caterina with a bell tower

Event

  • On September 8 of each year there is a procession with two giant warriors held in honor of the Madonna.
