Mitchell County (Kansas)

Mitchell County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Beloit.

Geography

The County is located in northern Kansas, is about 45 km from Nebraska and has an area of 1861 square kilometers, of which 49 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jewell County, Cloud County, Ottawa County, Lincoln County and Osborne County.

History

Mitchell County was formed on 26 February 1867. It was named after William D. Mitchell, an officer during the American Civil War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Mitchell County 6932 people in 2850 households and 1863 families in Mitchell County. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 97.61 percent White, 0.52 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.23 percent from other races groups; 0.91 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.88 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2850 households out of which 27.8 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 57.3 percent were married couples living together, 5.3 percent were single mothers and 34.6 percent were non-families. 31.2 percent of all households were single-person households and 16.2 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.91.

24.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.5 percent 18 to 24 years 22.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 21.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males. For every 100 adult women 18 years and older 97.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,385, and the median income for a family was $ 41,899. Males had a median income of $ 26,478, women $ 20,220. The per capita income was $ 17,653. 6.5 percent of families and 9.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
