Mitchell County (North Carolina)

Mitchell County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bakersville, which was named after David Baker, an early settler in the area.

Geography

The County is located in western North Carilona, bordered to the north Tennessee and has an area of 575 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Avery County, McDowell County and Yancey County.

Mitchell County is divided into nine townships: Bakersville, Bradshaw, Cane Creek, Fork Mountain -Little Rock Creek (previously two separate townships ), Grassy Creek, Harrell, Poplar, Red Hill and Snow Creek.

History

Mitchell County was formed in 1861 from parts of Burke County, Caldwell County, MacDowell County, Watauga County, and Yancey County. It was named for Dr. Elisha Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina, who died in the study of Mount Mitchell.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Mitchell County 15,687 people in 6,551 households and 4,736 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer.
