Mitchelstown

Mitchelstown ( Irish: Baile Mhistéala ) is a town with 3365 inhabitants ( 2006) in the central southern inland areas of the Republic of Ireland.

The place

Mitchelstown is located in the extreme north east of County Cork, on the border of south-eastern County Limerick, close to the County Tipperary, and is heavily agricultural. Its location on the M8/N8 to Cork City and by the national road N73 to Mallow ( and in due course as the N72 to Killarney, County Kerry) is the place traffic- and heavily developed.

From the 8th to the 19th century there was a round tower at Brigown. The modern city was planned and built 1775-1820 by the Earl of Kingston. In 1798 he built the Mitchelstown Castle, Windsor Castle had a role model. 1922, was set on fire during the civil war by the rebels for the government troops could not use. Stones from the ruins were used for the construction of Mount Mellary.
