Mitsuko Uchida

Mitsuko Uchida (内 田 光子Japanese, Mitsuko Uchida, born 20 December 1948 in Atami ) is a Japanese pianist.

Life

The daughter of a diplomat stationed in Vienna she came early into contact with the music. At age 12, she began studying music with Richard Hauser at the Vienna Academy of Music. At 14, she was in the Brahms Hall of the Vienna Musikverein building her first public concert, which was soon followed by other appearances. Later she studied with Wilhelm Kempff and Stefan Askenase. In 1969 she won the first prize at the Vienna Beethoven Competition in 1970 the 2nd prize at the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

In 1972, she moved to London. There began her international career. In 1975 she won the International Piano Competition in Leeds. In 1982, she played in London's Wigmore Hall piano sonatas of Mozart.
