Renatured area of the center Riede bei Riddagshausen, the linear -old course is right of the path

The funds Riede is an artificial stream branch of the honeycomb in what is now the city of Braunschweig and flows mostly parallel to the honeycomb.

Topography

The creek branches on Schöppenstedter tower near small Schoeppenstedt from a tributary or Hochwasserentlaster the honeycomb. It flows through Riddagshausen and finally joins up with Querum, 400 m downstream of the honeycomb, in the Schunter. In the area of Riddagshausen made countless connections to the various fish ponds. Since 2009, an extensive restoration area has been created in the area between the main road and the railway line 1 Brunswick- Magdeburg, in which the means Riede runs through meanders and shallow wetlands. In the more northerly section south of the monastery Riddagshausens and further downstream at the level of Ottenroder road Renaturierungsmaßnhamen in the form of floodplains and riparian alterations are also approved. Moreover, the means Riede is straight and is classified as " unsatisfactory" in its structure. It is considered of honeycomb and means Riede as the main body of water.

History

Drainage ditch

Due to the parallel course of the honeycomb is assumed that there is an in early middle age artificially applied water at the middle Riede. It was probably built by the monks of the monastery Riddagshausen for irrigation and drainage of Riddagshausener fish ponds. As emergence period here the 12th is set to the 13th century.

Landwehr

In the 14th and 15th centuries, the partial reconstruction took place in the context of the Brunswick Landwehr. In a map of 1730 which means Riede is also explicitly called Landwehr and described beside the comb and two other parallel trenches. Was built the Brunswick militia 1384-1416 and consisted of three to four ditches and planted walls. In the north the Schunterauen fulfilled this function in a natural way. In the east, the militia turned on butter mountain to the south and followed the agent Riede. The fortifications were finally demolished in the 18th century.

Schunterkanal

After the agent Riede had lost your benefit as Landwehr with the end of the Middle Ages, was started in 1750 with the expansion of the Schunterkanal. Braunschweig already had several ports, mostly on the Oker, and was so connected via the Aller and Weser to the North Sea. Due to the rapidly increasing population but also a great demand for wood and stones from the surrounding area was formed. While firewood from the direct surroundings came into the city, timber and limestone from Elm were procured. For transport, the Schunter was expanded to Massengütertransportweg. However, a problem arose from the fact that the previous ports were all on the Oker. The transport should have been made on the shallow Schuntermündung at Walle and then several kilometers upstream on the river Oker.

To avoid this, it was decided to expand the old country Wehrgraben means Riede. The old middle Riede was expanded to the level of Gliesmaroder tower. From here, a connecting channel to the Oker was built that ran in a westerly direction between the present streets of Gliesmaroder Street and Charles Street and the Oker reached at Fallersleber gate on the site of today's Botanic Gardens. Its water was developed with the approximately 1.80 m deep and 9-15 m wide channel by means Riede and honeycomb. For this purpose, the water of the means Riede between Gliesmaroder tower and Schunter was dammed by a 18 m long and 6 m wide sluice. The construction period lasted from 1747 to 1750. Already in 1788, the company was largely discontinued, and the channel silted up.

Origin of the name

The name contains the in Braunschweig, widespread ending- riede for stream or watercourse. In Braunschweig, the city offer except the center Riede still a small vineyard in the middle elasticated calibration. The name means beginning - can be interpreted from the position between two parcels or as a border river. The course of the Landwehr suggests.

Flora and Fauna

In line with its current function as Hochwasserentlaster the comb means Riede has been expanded and fortified. The creek flows mainly through farmland and meadows, but are severely limited by the urban development of the city. Only in a few sections, the means Riede is shaded by trees, so that the stream in summer strongly verkrautet.

The seabed consists mainly of fine sand and a very small proportion of gravel, at low-flow points also from digested sludge. The water quality report of the state of Lower Saxony from 2000 classifies the entire course of a means Riede as moderately polluted ( Class II ). This review has been confirmed in 2011, and the quality in each section remains largely the same.

Through the straightened course of the center Riede, the flow velocity is relatively high, making 2/3 of the organisms to be found are typical flow water dwellers. Despite the lack of speed bumps but were also a number of still water organisms colonize. In total there are 6 species that are performed on the Red List of Lower Saxony:

  • 2 types of mayflies
  • Two types of narrow water beetles
  • The Banded Demoiselle
  • Green Snaketail
