Mitterfels lies in the Danube- forest on a cliff plateau above the Menach. The exposed position brought the place early on a the name 'Bayerisches Jerusalem. "

History

1104 founded the Counts of Bogen the nearby monastery Oberalteich. The Mitterfels castle was first mentioned in 1194. This coincided with the extinction of the Counts of Bogen in 1242 to the Wittelsbach family. Mitterfels was from 1280 to 1799 the seat of a Pflegamts and 1799-1879 of the District Court of the electorate and the Kingdom of Bavaria. In the Thirty Years' War the fortress Mitterfels 1633/34 fell to the Swedes. In the 18th century the Pandurs attacks were successfully repulsed. In the course of administrative reform in Bavaria, was born with the congregation of 1818, the current community. It's made of the locations of the control district Mitterfels, as well as individual locations from the control districts Gaishausen ( front and rear carrying mountain ), Haselbach ( Einfürst ) and Asha ( Auhof, England mountain, Hörmann mountain ) is formed. The district court was disbanded in 1861, a district court was in Mitterfels castle until 1973.

Despite its central place function as the administrative center Mitterfels had no market or municipal law. Only in 1968 it was raised to the market.

The castle, which is owned by the municipality and seat of the administrative community Mitterfels today, one of the formative landscape architectural monuments of the region. The historic Hien - Sölde, a 1436 -built small farmhouse in block design, has national significance.

In 1876 Scheibelsgrub was incorporated.

On 1 May 1978, the districts Hagnberg, Kögl and Meadow Point of the dissolved municipality Gaishausen were incorporated after midnight rock.

Culture and sights

  • Castle Mitterfels emerged from the castle of the Counts of Bogen. The remains of the medieval castle are separated from the village by a 20 meter deep moat, which is spanned by a stone bridge built in 1791. The main tower collapsed in 1812. Were preserved remains of the ramparts, the prison wing of the 18th century and the nurses home. The 1780 instead of an older building built castle, formerly Pfleg, State and district court, since 1973, serves as the town hall and is since 1977 the seat of the administrative community Mitterfels.
  • The former prison was added in the 18th century in the tower kennel. It was until 1879 the prison of the district court and until 1949 the local court Mitterfels. Here is since 1982 the museum with original prison cells.
  • The side St. George's Church was built in a castle and chapel. It was rebuilt in 1734 and was until 1805 a branch church of the monastery parish churches Cross. From 1805 to 1970 she served as the parish church of the new parish Mitterfels until it was replaced by the new Holy Spirit. The zweijochige nave has a Tuscan pilasters and a vaulted ceiling.
