Miyamoto (crater)

Miyamoto is a crater on Mars, west of the Meridiani Planum.

Miyamoto has a diameter of approximately 160 kilometers. The northeastern half of the crater is covered by rocks which were apparently formed by water and contain iron and sulfur minerals that are typically deposited on the bottom of lakes and ground water ponds. In the southwestern crater half of these deposits are removed by erosion, revealing layers of clay and other materials, as they would be found in the most ancient Martian rocks. With an age of more than 3.5 billion years they dated to a time in which probably seemed to surface water on Mars and possibly created favorable living conditions.

Miyamoto is therefore considered as a possible landing site for the Mars Science Laboratory.
