Mjøndalen

The place Mjøndalen is the administrative seat of the municipality Nedre Eiker in the province Buskerud. He is about eleven kilometers west of the city of Drammen on the south side of the River Drammen River and forms part of the Tettsted Drammen. Mjøndalen has about 8000 inhabitants.

History

The name comes from the Norse word Mylnudalr that of Mylna ( mill) and dal (Valley) is derived.

Economy and Transport

Mjøndalens economy is based on several industries, the most important among them are the wood finishing, furniture and wood products, paper industry and the textile and clothing industry.

The European Route 134 connects Drammen with Mjøndalen and continues up to the west coast to Haugesund. The bridge connects Mjøndalsbrua Mjøndalen with the place Krokstadelva on the opposite side of the Drammenelva. Furthermore Mjøndalen has a connection to the Randsfjordbanen.

Culture and Sport

The poet Herman Wildenvey grew up on the farm Portåsen in Mjøndalen. A statue of him made ​​by Ørnulf Bast, graces the city park.

Mjøndalen home to the football club Mjøndalen IF, which was in 1933, 1934 and 1937 Norwegian Cup winners.
