Mladen Urem

Mladen Urem ( born April 16, 1964 in Rijeka) is a Croatian literary critic, editor and publicist.

Life

Mladen Urem graduated from the Medical Faculty of the University of Rijeka in radiology and at the Faculty of Philosophy in Kroatistik.

From 1980 to 1982 singer and guitarist of the New Wave rock group Istočni Izlaz (Eastern Exit). Represented in the 1994 publication Little Encyclopedia of Croatian pop and rock music (Croatian: Mala enciklopedija hrvatske pop i rock glazbe ). Literary editor of the journal Val ( The Wave, 1985-1989 ), founder and principal executive editor of the literary magazine Rival ( 1988-2000 ) and its affiliated book series Biblioteka Val - Focus: Edition of author literature ( since 1987). Co-founder of the Journal of Philology Fluminensia (1989 ), founder and chief editor of the Journal for Cultural Sušačka revija (1993-1995) and editor of the journal Dometi (1996).

In the thirteen years of its existence appeared in the magazine led by Urem Rival works and contributions of 800 authors on topics from art and literature in Croatia and around the world. The magazine presented a variety of global cultural trends and currents of the 90s, especially a writer, which some years later respectable prizes and awards given were (for example, VS Naipaul - Nobel Laureate, and many others ), and it was generally regarded as one of the most important magazines in the Croatian area. Additional merits of Rival include publication of works by Croatian authors in English translation and an active and close collaboration with journals from the English-speaking world.

Mladen Urem has published the following books: Riječki pitcher REDOM (1987 ), Pogledom u Riječ (1987 ), Janko Polić Kamov: Selected Short Stories and Poems (1997), Dan velikih Valova ( poetry and prose of the Rival generation, with a complete Rival Bibliography 1988-2000, as well as a bibliography of Val- library for the period 1987-2001, in co-authorship with Goran Ušljebrka and Milan Zagorac, 2001), as well as Pavica Julija Kaftanić ( in co-authorship with Boris Zakošek, Lovorka jerk and Igor Žic, 2005) and Southerly Thoughts and Other Stories ( An Anthology of Short Stories by Croatian Ksaver Šandor Gjalski, Janko Polić Kamov, Miroslav Krleža, Vladan Desnica, Ranko Marinković, Slobodan Novak, Ivan Aralica, Ivan Slamnig, Anton Šoljan and Nedjeljko Fabrio; Selection by Mladen Urem, Damir Bilicic and Želimir Galjanić, 2005). In October 2006, his book Janko Polić Kamov, Dora Maar i hrvatska Avangarda appeared ( German: Janko Polić Kamov, Dora Maar and the Croatian avant-garde ).

Urem wrote a variety of essays, studies and research to more recent Croatian literature, especially the life and work of Janko Polić Kamov (* 1886 in Rijeka, † 1910 in Barcelona ), many of which appeared in well-known American and Croatian magazines. In collaboration with Dolores Čikić and Boris Zakošek he explored for the Paris house for genealogical research Andriveau the genealogy Dora Maar (1907-1997) and her father, the architect Josip Marković (* 1874 in Sisak, † 1969 in Paris) and published this work in the daily newspaper Večernji list and in the afterword to the book by Alicia Dujovne Ortiz Dora Maar - zatočenica pogleda (Zagreb 2004), title of the French edition: Prison kidney regard you.

Employees of American literary magazines Grand Street (New York), Partisan Review ( Boston), World Literature Today (Norman, Oklahoma), Corner ( Oakland, California), where he and works of Croatian authors Janko Polić Kamov, Miroslav Krleža, Ivo Andrić Ivan Goran Kovačić presented and published. In the magazine Accents ( Munich), he published a translation of the story Žalost ( mourning) by Janko Polić Kamov. Cooperation with renowned American writers and editors Deborah Treisman (born 1971 ), William Phillips ( 1907-2002 ), Robert W. Bingham ( 1966-1999 ) and others. Collaboration with the renowned British historian Lucy Hughes Hallett ( b. 1953 ).

Urem published nearly two hundred texts on Croatian literature and was the editor of many books as well. He was several times a member of the jury for the award of literary prizes Drago Gervais and Nagrada grada Rijeke ( Prize of the City of Rijeka ). Member of the Croatian PEN Centre in Zagreb. Currently Urem works in the State Archives Rijeka as head of the reading room, the library and the Department of Archive Publications.
