Mlava

The Mlava (Cyrillic Млава ) is a river in north-eastern Serbia.

The Mlava rises near Žagubica from a strong karstic spring. There also opens its source river Tisnica. This stream rises in the Homolje mountains on the mountain Veliki Krš. After Ribare the Mlava cuts through a mountain range in a narrow valley, the Gornjačka klisura which widens at its center at Krepoljin to a small level. At this part of the river is the monastery of Gornjak, then Ždrelo, Malo Laole, Veliko Laole and Petrovac na Mlavi. From Ždrelo the valley widens to underflow.

In the lower reaches of the valley of the Mlava is separated by the ridge Kosa from the valley of the Morava River, west of the heights is the chief town of the district Braničevo the city Požarevac. Rights tributaries in the lower reaches are Stamnicka and Boljetinska, left tributaries are Busur and Cokordin. The Mlava resulted initially in the tributary of the Danube Dunavac. The Danube River is dammed at the mouth of Mlava to Djerdapsee the Iron Gate.

Near the mouth of the Mlava in the Danube are the places Drmno and Kostolac. They belong to the coal mining area around Kostolac.

In Kostolac lies the archaeological site of the Roman fortress Viminacium. This place was one of the pillars of the Roman defense against the coming of northern conquerors in the age of migration. It was destroyed by the Huns around 440 to 586 by the Avars, 599 succeeded the Romans north of the city as part of the Balkan campaigns of Maurikios a victory over the Avars.
