MMDF

MMDF ( " multi-channel Memo Distribution Facility ") is a mail transfer agent, which originated at the University of Delaware. MMDF was introduced in late 1979 at a symposium of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. David Crocker had begun in 1978 and completed the design of the programming in the spring of 1979.

Operation

MMDF provides transparent access to different network and communication protocols independent of the Mail User Agent ( MUA). One or more MUAs can therefore be used on a single system.

Reception

MMDF receives the incoming messages from the input program each channel. In this case, the program Submit laid the receiver and has a corresponding channel for the delivery to. MMDF then selects the channel:

  • Local - for local delivery.
  • Badusers - when there is no local user.
  • Badhosts - for further treatment for receiver determination.
  • For non-local delivery, a network channel: eg UUCP.

Now the program Submit places the message into the appropriate channel queue. Deliver The program then transfers the mail from each queue in the appropriate channel for delivery to the user.

Shipping

Deliver the scheduled program is executed to transmit messages from the channel queue to the corresponding channel program, which then routes them to the destination.
