Moala Island

Moala is a volcanic island in the southwest of the Lau archipelago in the Pacific Ocean. Politically, it is part of the Eastern Division of the island nation Fiji.

Geography

Moala is the northernmost island in the Moala Group named after her, a group of three atolls that make up the south-western region of the Lau archipelago. The island is located about 40 km northwest of Totoya, 55 km north-east of Matuku and 70 km southeast of Gau, the largest islands of Lomaiviti Islands. Moala - besides Matuku - the only island in the archipelago west of the 180th meridian. The anvil- shaped island is 13 km long, up to 11 km wide and has an area of 62.5 km ², making it the largest island in the Lau archipelago. It forms the central volcanic island of a comparatively young and is incomplete atoll surrounded by a coral reef. The hilly island is forested and reaches a height of 468 m Delaimoala above the sea.

Management

Moala is one of the 13 traditional districts ( Fiji: Tikina ) the province of Lau and is divided into the eight villages ( Fiji: Koro ) Naroi, Nasoki, Keteira, Vunuku, Čaková, Vadra, Maloku, Muaikacuni. Capital of the island is Naroi in the northeast; there is also the island's airport ( IATA code: MFJ, ICAO code: NFMO ).
