Moaz al-Khatib

Ahmed Moa -al-Khatib al - Hasani (Arabic أحمد معاذ الخطيب الحسني Ahmad Mu'adh al - Khateeb al - Hassani, DMG Aḥmad Mu ʿ al - Khatib al - AD Hasani, born 1960 in Damascus, Syria) is a Syrian opposition politician and is since November 11, 2012 President of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and opposition forces.

Al- Khatib is a Sunni Muslim and former Imam of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. His faith interpretation is described by observers as moderate. In an interview with Al Jazeera in 2006, he expressed the wish that Alawites should convert to the Shia, because then they could follow a faith with clear structures.

Because of its critical stance towards the government of Bashar al -Assad, he was arrested several times and has lived since his escape in 2012 from Syria in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

On March 24, 2013 al - Khatib told his immediate resignation as president of the National Coalition. As a possible reason for this step expressions al - Khatib in which he denounces a lack of support from Western powers for the opposition coalition apply. In addition, he is said to have used against the formation of a transitional government of the opposition. Al- Khatib rejected the choice of Ghassan Hitto by the National Coalition for the head of government controlled by the Syrian rebel-held areas on 18 March 2013. In contrast to al - Khatib, the new Premier is against any dialogue with representatives of the Assad government. Other reasons for al - Khatib withdraw observers see his complete rejection of possible plans of the United States, Syria, following the example of the Taif Agreement to share for Lebanon or the Dayton Agreement for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Circles within the Syrian opposition lead al - Khatib retreat back to the increased influence of the Qatari government, which supported the rebels, and especially the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood.

The National Coalition did not accept his resignation, however, and called on him to retain his office. On March 28, 2013, withdrew his resignation decision and reiterated to stay 2013 President of the National Coalition to May.
