Moaz al-Khatib
Ahmed Moa -al-Khatib al - Hasani (Arabic أحمد معاذ الخطيب الحسني Ahmad Mu'adh al - Khateeb al - Hassani, DMG Aḥmad Mu ʿ al - Khatib al - AD Hasani, born 1960 in Damascus, Syria) is a Syrian opposition politician and is since November 11, 2012 President of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and opposition forces.
Al- Khatib is a Sunni Muslim and former Imam of the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. His faith interpretation is described by observers as moderate. In an interview with Al Jazeera in 2006, he expressed the wish that Alawites should convert to the Shia, because then they could follow a faith with clear structures.
Because of its critical stance towards the government of Bashar al -Assad, he was arrested several times and has lived since his escape in 2012 from Syria in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
On March 24, 2013 al - Khatib told his immediate resignation as president of the National Coalition.
