The building

The two-story, symmetrically arranged building with a central bell tower dates from the Japanese colonial period. Designed as a school, was started in 1920 with the construction work on a design by Kondo Joro. By the year 1946 the building housed the Jiancheng primary school, after that it was used by the city government of Taipei. Only in 1993 the city administration was moved under Mayor Huang Ta - chou to another place, and decided after extensive renovation work both Jiancheng Middle School as well as an art museum to be accommodated in the complex.
