Mōdraniht

Mōdraniht ( maternal night) denotes an Anglo-Saxon wintry holiday. It is for the period between 500 and 700 is in the Venerable Bede 's De ratione Temporum. In Chapter 15, De Mensibus Anglorum ( English months), the author writes:

" But you start the year with the eighth calendar of January, we celebrate the birth of the Lord. And that same night, which is especially sacred to us is called by the pagans Modranicht, means what night of the mothers ... "
