Moe (Victoria)

Moe is a city in the Latrobe Valley in the Gippsland region of the Australian state of Victoria. It is located about 135 kilometers east of Melbourne. According to the census of 2006, Moe (including Newborough and Yallourn North ) 15 582 inhabitants. The city is part of the Local Government Area Latrobe City. Originally the town was named The Mowie, later Little Moi. Presumably, the city name is derived from an aboriginal word - Kurnai language that meant "swamp land".

Moe 's guidance and stopping point for tourists on their way to Erica, the historic gold mining town of Walhalla, Walhalla Goldfields Railway and the Mount Baw Baw. In Moe every year the horses races of the Moe Cup are aligned and in March, a restored historic Gippsland settlement near the Lake Narracan, the Moe Jazz Festival. History

1852 in Moe, a small amount of gold was found. A small settlement on Narracan Creek was a stopping point on the journey to the gold fields of Walhalla further north. On March 17, 1862 a post office was opened.

The settlement was mentioned in a document in 1879 after Etalblierung the Shire of Narracoan. A year later came the railway connection from Morwell direction. 1963 Moe became a town.

The local economy consists of lignite mining in the Latrobe Valley and their generation. Also the area for its dairy industry is known.

The Moe High School was opened in 1952. Later, the school with the Lowanna Secondary College was merged and the campus was built on with houses. Jason Bek, former student of Moe High School, is the current Rector of Lowanna Secondary College.

According to 2006 census, there were 15 582 inhabitants female in the Urban Region Moe - Yallourn, of which 51.7 % are male and 48.3 %. 1.4 % of the population belonged to the Aborigines and 78.7 % were born in Australia. 4.1% were immigrants from England, 1.7% came from the Netherlands, 1.5% Scotland, 1.4% in Malta and 1.2% from Germany.
