Moëlan-sur-Mer

Moëlan -sur -Mer is a commune with 6981 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Finistère in the Brittany region; it belongs to the administrative district in the canton of Quimper and Pont -Aven.

Geography

The community is located about 20 kilometers northwest of Lorient and 40 kilometers southeast of Quimper, on the Atlantic coast. Neighboring communities of Moëlan -sur -Mer:

  • Baye in the north,
  • Quimperlé in the Northeast,
  • Clohars -Carnoët in the east and,
  • Riec -sur -Belon in the West.

The coastline of the Atlantic Ocean is located on the southern edge of the municipality, the municipal seat is located about four miles inland. On the northwestern edge of the municipality of Belon River, which flows into an estuary at Cape Pointe de Kerhemen in the sea runs. Further east, open the two river Brigneau and Merrien with small mouth funnels also into the Atlantic. The coastline is mostly rocky, in between there are also sandy beaches such as Plage de Kerfany les Pins or the Plage de Trenez.

The municipality is supplied by the department roads D24 and D224 ( Riec -sur -Belon on Moëlan after Guidel ) and the D116 ( from the Pointe de Kerhemen about Moëlan to Quimperlé ).

Attractions

Besides a large number of finds from the Neolithic period, as menhirs, stone rows and dolmens are available in the community or other art treasures:

  • Chapelle Saint Philibert, chapel from the 16th century - Monument historique
  • Église Saint Mélaine, church from the 17th century - with valuable furniture

Economy

The municipality invested as a seaside resort in tourism, in the mouth of the rivers hoppers port facilities have been set up for boats. The estuary of the river Belon is particularly known for its oysters.
