Mogpog, Marinduque

Mogpog is a town 3rd class in the province of Marinduque, Philippines. It has 33,384 inhabitants ( census of 1 May 2010 ). It lies opposite to the same Mogpog Passage, the Bondoc Peninsula in the east.

History

Mogpog was founded in 1807 by a local governor of the Spanish colonial period. These so-called Gobernadorcillos were later called Capitan Municipal or Municipal Mayor. The first Capitan Municipal was Don Nicolas del Rosario.

Also in 1807 the parish church of St. Isidore was built.

Mogpog comes from the word Maapog on what an abundance of apog ( clay) or means of Mag- aapog that indicates Kalkbrenner or lime. A Calero (Spanish for lime kiln ) existed at the arrival of the Spaniards already in the neighborhood, so that the Filipino term for it was well taken.

In the late 17th and 18th centuries Mogpog was surrounded by wooded areas that were later converted to a variety of small areas for the cultivation of rice and root crops.

Known as Mataas na Bayan hill later called Anapog; the place where the caleros ( Kalkbrenner) and their families lived. Their houses were covered with Cogon, the walls were made of palm leaves.

In the circle of these simple people of Tubong was (also known as Putong ). It is a joyous musical performance, accompanied by dance steps that express thanksgiving and prayer for the welfare and long life of a birthday boy or a visitor from another place.

During the tenure of Ortsvorstehers Macario Arceo the community came in 1904 in financial difficulties and Mogpog the government asked for help. For a period of four years Mogpog the administration was under by Boac, but not as Barangay but as part of community with its own local council.

In 1909, the income tax and as Regino Labao improved in 1910, was city manager, the community recovered to the extent of their financial deficits that the supervision was abolished by Boac.

1942 Japanese troops occupied the city Mogpog.

In 1945 the city was liberated by the American and Philippine troops in the Battle of Marinduque by the Japanese.

Attractions in the city

For inner city district consists of the districts of Dulong Bayan, Bayan Gitnang, MarketSite, Mataas na Bayan Villa Mendez and Nangka I.

Mogpog has two partially privatized, secondary schools, the Quezon Roxas High School and the Marinduque Academy, the latter located in the district Gitnang Bayan. The Marinduque Academy has a known fanfare.

In addition to the Marinduque Academy is the primary school Mogpog Central School and the San Isidro Labrador Parish Church.

Is the marketplace that offers a beautiful view of the local park, the city hall and the courthouse on the right side of the main building of the Academy.

Other places of interest

In the district Balanacan is the port. He is known for his statue of Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage.

Local festivals

The famous Moriones festival has its origins in allegedly Mogpog. The festival is one of the most colorful in Marinduque and the Philippines. It takes place in Mogpog and the neighboring regions of Marinduque.

Mogpog is divided politically into 37 districts ( barangays ).

Hinanggayon was originally a part of Barangay Argao; 1954, the district became a separate Baranggay.
