Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz
General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz (Arabic: محمد ولد عبد العزيز, DMG Muḥammad ʿ Abd al - ʿ wuld Azeez, born December 20, 1956 in Akjoujt, Mauritania ) was from 2008 to 2009 Chairman of the conseil d' état Skin ( High Council of State) and thus since the military coup in August 2008 and the next day made impeachment of President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh selected Abdallahi by the junta de facto leader of Mauritania 6. On 15 April 2009 he resigned from this post in order to compete in the presidential election in June, one which he won in July 2009.
Career
In 2005, Abdel Aziz, then the rank of colonel, as Commander of the Presidential Guard ( BASEP ) in a leading role in the coup against Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya part and then became a member of the military junta CMJD. After this Junta had dissolved after the election of Cheikh Abdallahi Ould Sidi Mohamed for president, the new president Abdel Aziz promoted in September 2007 to general and appointed him as the Chief of the General Staff.
2008 conflict between the president and the newly formed government began the one hand and leading officers to Abdel Aziz and parts of the ruling party ADIL other. 2 August 2008 were 25 MPs and 23 senators ( members of the Parliament of the First Chamber ), allegedly at the behest of the military, from the ADIL fraction of what the government cost the parliamentary majority and a severe political crisis triggered. In this situation, Abdel Aziz was on 6 August the President Abdallahi, Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed El the Waghef and the interior minister arrested by members of the BASEP. On the following day it was announced that the is " High State Council ", whose president Abdel Aziz, now takes over the constitutional rights and duties of the President. A new government will be formed soon, the Parliament and all local authorities are as yet remain.
In July 2009, Abdel Aziz had won the presidential election in Mauritania.
In October 2012, Abdel Aziz was shot on the way back from a weekend stay in Tweila back to the capital Nouakchott by a military patrol. He was flown for treatment of wounds to Paris. The incident was initially classified by local radio stations as assassination attempt. On the other hand this is an error, the speech was in government statements ( " shot by mistake" ).
On 30 January 2014, the General Assembly of the African Union elected him chairman of the AU.
