Moirans-en-Montagne

Moirans -en- Montagne is a commune in the French department of Jura in the Franche -Comté. It is the capital of the canton of Moirans -en- Montagne in the arrondissement of Saint -Claude.

Geography

Moirans -en- Montagne is located at 623 m above sea level. M., 12 km west-northwest of the town of Saint -Claude (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in a klusartigen valley between Mount Robert in the west and the wooded heights of the Forêt de Moirans in the east, east of Vouglan.

The area of ​​26.56 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The area is drained by the village stream of Moirans west to Vouglan. This reservoir, which has a width of about 1 km in the area of Moirans -en- Montagne, forms the western boundary and is approximately 100 m sunk into the surrounding plateau. From Vouglan, the municipality's area extends eastward across a steep slope on the adjacent plateau of Moirans. In the east the plateau is dominated ( 743 m above sea level. M. ) and Mont Saint- Christophe ( 785 m above sea level. M. ) from the narrow ridges of Mont Robert. Between them lies the entrance to the valley of klusartige Moirans, which is lined on both sides by steep slopes and rock edges. Further east, the municipality of ground on the most densely forested plateaus of the Jura range ( Forêt de Moirans ) and up to the Roche d' Antre (961 m above sea level. M. ). The area of Moirans -en- Montagne is part of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut- Jura.

History

Moirans -en- Montagne can look back on a very long urban tradition. The municipality's territory remains were found from the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. During the Roman period the settlement was located here Mauriana from which is derived the modern place name.

In the 12th century monks founded the Abbey of Saint -Claude, a priory in Klustal of Moirans. A market town which was fortified in the 13th century developed in the Middle Ages on the site of the former Gallo- Roman settlement at the foot of the castle hill (Château de Charbonnel ). The castle became the center of a barony, which was dependent on the Abbey of Saint -Claude. It was destroyed in 1637 by French troops. Together with the Franche -Comté Moirans came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France. In 1929 Moirans was officially renamed for better distinguishability of Moirans in the department of Isère in Moirans -en- Montagne.

Attractions

The present parish church of Moirans -en- Montagne was built in the 15th century in the Gothic Flamboyant style. It replaced an earlier parish church whose choir was converted into a chapel in the 17th century. Of the two medieval castles, the Vieux -Château (13th century) and the Château -Neuf (14th century ), partial residence of the abbots of Saint- Claude, ruins remain. The Hôtel de Ville (Town Hall ) was built in 1857. The Musée du Jouet toys from the 19th and 20th century are shown.

Population

With 2287 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Moirans -en- Montagne is one of the medium-sized towns in the Jura. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the area of around 1500 people, a significant increase in population was recorded primarily at the beginning of the 1970s.

Economy and infrastructure

Moirans -en- Montagne was up a long time mainly coined by agriculture, retail trade and the forestry village. Among the traditional industries include the manufacture of wooden toys. Since the 1980s, developed on the plateau west of Moirans -en- Montagne, a major industrial and commercial zone. Here, companies in the sector were down toy manufacturing ( wood and plastic), plastic industry, production of car accessories and transport industry.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the main road D470 which leads from Lons -le- Saunier to Saint -Claude. The nearest links to the motorway A404 ( Saint -Martin- du- Frêne - Oyonnax ) is located at a distance of around 22 km.
