Moita [ moitɐ ] is a small town ( Vila ) in Portugal, in the region of Lisbon. In the town of 17,692 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011). Moita is known for its bullfighting tradition.

History

King Sancho I gave in 1186 the region from the south bank of the Tagus River (now known as Margem Sul ) of the Order of Santiago. Today's town has arisen only from 1217, after the definitive reconquest of Alcácer do Sal in 1319 was with São Lourenço de Alhos Vedros a first independent community created. Alhos Vedros was in 1477 appointed to Vila to be 1479 headquarters of an independent circuit. 1514 was the municipal charter.

During the 16th century, small towns formed in the area. Due to the densely forested area, the population grew only slowly here. The most significant economic activity was, in addition to fishing and agriculture, especially the ferry across the broad Tagus. Moita has been increasingly becoming a major transit point between the capital Lisbon and the south of the country. Culture and sights
