Mokhotlong District

Location of District Mokhotlong in Lesotho

The District Mokhotlong is one of ten districts ( districts ) of the Kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa.

Geography

The district lies to the east of Lesotho. He's ( German: place of the smooth neck Rapp ) after its capital Mokhotlong named. Its size is 4075 km ², its population 96 340 (2006 ). This makes it the smallest and least populated district in the country.

The district is located in the Mokhotlong Maloti Mountains. To the east of the district is the highest mountain in southern Africa, the 3482 meter high Thabana Ntlenyana. With the Tlaeeng Pass - 3275 meters above sea level - the district has also over the highest road pass in Africa.

The district is bounded on the northwest by the district Butha -Buthe, to the south by the district of Thaba- Tseka and to the west by the district Leribe. In the northeast of the District Mokhotlong has a short border with the South African province of the Free State. East of the District Mokhotlong is the South African province of KwaZulu -Natal, to which there is the border crossing at Sani Pass.
