Mokoia Island

Mokoia Iceland is an island in Lake Rotorua in New Zealand. It has an area of 1.35 km ². It is a cathedral of rhyolite lava, which rises 180 m above the lake.

The island is the Māori iwi of Te Arawa from the sacred and the scene of one of the most famous legends of New Zealand. The legend of Hinemoa and Tutanekai has parallels to the classical Greek story of Hero and Leander, but with a happier outcome.

According to legend, it was forbidden to marry two lovers. Hinemoas Umukaria father, a chief of the sea coast, it forbade her to go by canoe to Tutanekais village on the island. So Hinemoa who over the lake to swim 3.2 km and drawing inspiration from the sound of flute playing Tutanekais decided. As a flotation device they tied calabashes to the body, reaching with their help the island.

There are thermal springs, whose hot water the Hinemoa pool ( Māori: " Waikimihia " ) on the coast of the island forms.
