Mokošica

Mokošica is one of eight districts of the city of Dubrovnik, which is located in the Croatian Dubrovnik-Neretva county.

Geographical location

Mokošica, consisting of the villages of Stara and Nova Mokošica Mokošica (engl. Old and New Mokošica Mokošica ), is located about 6 km from the city center directly on the Adriatic Rijeka Dubrovacka, embedded and surrounded by mountains of the Dinaric Alps.

History

The origin of the name of Mokošica derives from the name of the fertility goddess and patroness of women Mokoš from, a figure from Slavic mythology. For several centuries settled, Mokošica won in the 16th century by the construction of summer residences of Dubrovnik aristocratic families of regional importance. With the enlargement of Dubrovnik, the construction of the settlement Nova Mokošica was approved by the local city planning in the late 1970s, which is to be completed at 5 planning and construction and the expansion to the west.

During the Croatia War there were many casualties among the civilian population. After the conquest and occupation Mokošicas by the Yugoslav army and irregulars, the majority of the population fled. However, the settlement was in contrast to other nearby villages in the municipality of Dubrovnik Primorje largely undamaged, which is due to the fact that the commander of the occupying forces had chosen the local primary school as their headquarters. On May 26, 1992, the occupying forces had to retreat.

Development

While the district of Stara Mokošica shows unchanged for decades, the development of Nova Mokošica is not yet complete. After the construction of up to six - storey buildings in the first phase in 1980, followed in the subsequent phases of 2 - and 3-storey residential buildings and single-family homes. Currently, the fifth phase is in preparation.

Traffic

Mokošica is served by the city bus lines 1A and 1B of Libertas. The construction of the bridge Dubrovnik Mokošica was considerably relieved, because the transit traffic of national road D8 from northern Croatia now no longer runs along the Rijeka Dubrovačka through the village.

Population

The population consists mainly of Croats, with a low percentage of Serbs and Bosnians. According to 2001 census Mokošica had 7,528 inhabitants, 6041 people in Nova Mokošica and 1487 inhabitants in Stara Mokošica.

Economy

The largest economic sector in which the majority of the population is engaged, is tourism. The majority of the inhabitants of Mokošica commutes daily 6 km away in the city center of Dubrovnik to work. In Stara Mokošica offer only a small yard, a restaurant, a small retail shop and a tobacconist work. In Nova Mokošica - originally conceived as a dormitory town - to a larger shopping center in the future as well for a significant number of jobs worry about how the expansion of the marina in the nearby town district Komolac.
