Mokpo

Mokpo is a South Korean port city in the province of Jeollanam -do, located in the extreme southwest of the country at the mouth of Yeongsan into the Yellow Sea.

In the north and east of Mokpo Muan County borders on the, on the south by the county Yeongam and to the west and northwest is the district of Sinan, consisting of the offshore island groups.

Under the pressure of Japan in 1897, the port was open for trading. During this time, Mokpo was an important commercial and industrial city.

From 1910 to 1945, when Korea was incorporated into the Japanese Empire, the city Mokupo was named after the Japanese pronunciation of the city name木浦.

Since separating from Gwangju Jeollanam -do, she was also the most populous city a few years ago. The construction of the new provincial capital in Muan county takes place directly at the border to Mokpo.
