Moluccan Masked Owl

The Tanimbarese Barn Owl (Tyto sororcula ), also known as the Moluccas Barn Owl, is a species in the genus of owls, which is found only on the islands Tanimbarese and Buru ( Tanimbarese Islands). It is an extremely rare species, yet for which no observations in the wild. The description of the type based on only three bellows, two of which on Tanimbarese and were collected on Buru.

Features

The Tanimbarese Barn Owl reaches a body length of 29-31 centimeters. The body top is gray-brown and is mottled with black -rimmed white spots. The face veil is pale reddish brown with a thin, brown edge. The wings and the tail feathers are gray to reddish brown with dark transverse bands.

The lifestyle of the owl is unexplored, but probably similar to the species of the same genus. It is assumed that the habitat of the Tanimbarese Barn Owl are the primary forests of the lowlands of the two islands. The preservation of forests is considered essential for the preservation of the species
