Momsky District

The Momski ulus (Russian Момский улус, also Момский район, rajon Momski; Yakut улууһа Муома, Muoma uluuha ) is one of the 34 Ulusse ( Rajons ) of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia ) in the north of the Russian Far East Federal District. It lies in the east of the country near the Arctic Circle, south of the Ulusse Ust- Janski, Abyjski and Werchnekolymski and north of Oimjakonski ulus.

Geography

The Ulus has an area of about 101,700 km ², almost as much as Bavaria and Baden- Württemberg together. It is located in the East Siberian Uplands and from south to north of the Indigirka ( Yakut Indigir ) flow-through, flowing through it as the second source below their Ulus. The second largest river of the Ulus is 407 km long Moma ( Yakut Muoma ), which opens into the Indigirka the same administrative center of the Ulus of the East.

The Momski is very mountainous. The northern boundary runs through the up to 1847 m high Momagebirge. In the south the Tscherskigebirge is broken by the flowing down from the Oimjakonski ulus Indigirka. The highest elevation rises on the western border of the 2682 m high peaks Chen, between the Indigirka and the Moma Mount Pobeda, with 3147 m in the north- east of the Asian mainland.

The vegetation is in sheltered areas of the South Taiga, at high altitudes and in the north to the valley of tundra.

Demography

The population has declined since 1990 less than in neighboring areas:

The population is, with a slightly increasing trend, more than 90 % of members of indigenous ethnic groups. The proportion of Evens is the second highest among all Ulussen of the Republic.
