Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve

Mariposa Monarca Biosphere Reserve is on the border between the Mexican states of Michoacán and México, about 100 kilometers northwest of Mexico City.

It is one of the winter quarters of the monarch butterfly, an American butterfly.

In the area of the biosphere reserve hibernate from November to March may be up to a billion of them.

The monarch butterfly migrates annually up to 4000 km between the northern United States and Mexico.

The 56 259 -hectare area is located in a wooded mountainous region at about 3000 meters height.
