Monastir Governorate

The government Monastir (Arabic ولاية المنستير ) is one of 24 provinces in Tunisia. It lies on the Mediterranean coast in the north- east of the country has an area of 1,024 km ² ( in terms of area fourth- smallest province ) and a population of 525 500. The capital is the city of Monastir.

Geography

Monastir has a coastline of 35 kilometers to the Mediterranean. In the south, it borders on the province Mahdia, on the north by the province of Sousse. Administratively, the province in 13 Delegations, and in 31 municipalities is divided.

Economy

The largest part of the country is claimed by agriculture (about 86 percent of the total area); by far the most important crop is the olive. The second most important economic sector is the garment industry with production mainly for the European Community, followed by tourism and fishing.
